Le 1er janvier 2013, la commune a fusionné avec celles de Boudevilliers, Cernier, Chézard-Saint-Martin, Coffrane, Engollon, Fenin-Vilars-Saules, Fontainemelon, Fontaines, Les Geneveys-sur-Coffrane, Les Hauts-Geneveys, Montmollin, Le Pâquier, Savagnier et Villiers pour former la nouvelle commune de Val-de-Ruz.
Le village de Dombresson est situé à une altitude de 742m et compte environ 1'620 habitants.
La commune de Val-de-Ruz est la région d'origine de Didier Cuche, champion de ski aux multiples victoires en super-G, slalom géant et en descente sa discipline de prédilection, ainsi que de l'acteur et réalisateur Jean-François Balmer.
